What to Expect During Your Newborn Photoshoot

Booking a newborn photoshoot can feel like one more thing on an already overwhelming list. You want to capture these early days - to remember how small they were, how soft their skin felt, how they curled into your chest like they were still part of you.

But you're also tired. You're healing. You’re learning how to be someone’s everything.

It’s completely normal to feel unsure.

You might be wondering…

  • Will my baby settle or sleep?

  • What if I’m still sore or not feeling like myself?

  • Do I need to bring anything? What do I wear?

  • What if my baby cries the whole time?

These are questions I hear every single week, and I promise you, you’re not alone in them.

As a newborn photographer based in Bournemouth, I’ve designed every part of the session to be calm, flexible, and gentle - for both baby and you. This guide will walk you through exactly what to expect, so you feel prepared, reassured, and excited to capture your baby’s very first story.

It’s Calm, Unrushed, and Baby-Led

Newborn sessions are slow on purpose.

We typically allow 2 to 3 hours for the session, though we don’t stick to a stopwatch. Some babies snooze the whole way through. Others need feeding, winding, changing, and a good cuddle before we get started. That’s totally normal.

Everything about the shoot revolves around your baby’s natural rhythm.

If they need to feed mid-session? We pause.
If they want to be held for a while? We wait.
If they cry (because they’re a newborn!)? We soothe and take our time.

There’s no rush, no pressure, and no expectations. You can just be, and I’ll take care of the rest.

The Studio is Warm, Peaceful, and Ready for You

My newborn studio in Ensbury Park, Bournemouth is designed with new parents in mind.

From the moment you step through the door, I want you to feel like you can relax, whether you’re on day 5 or day 25 of life with your baby.

You’ll find:

  • A warm, softly lit space to keep baby comfortable

  • Cosy wraps, neutral blankets, soft textures all pre-set

  • A feeding pillow, changing station, and comfy chair

  • Gentle music or white noise, depending on your baby’s needs

You don’t need to bring anything except your usual nappy bag, and maybe a snack or two for yourself.

And if you're visiting from Poole, Wimborne, Christchurch, or Ferndown, the studio is easy to find and has free parking available right outside.

You’re Welcome in the Photos (But No Pressure)

Some parents worry about whether they have to be in the photos. The truth is: you don’t, but I gently recommend it.

Newborn sessions are one of the rare times when the camera can capture not just your baby, but your bond. The quiet, tender way you hold them. The way your hands cup their tiny face. The soft look in your eyes.

If you’re not feeling your best yet, I get it. There’s no pressure for formal portraits. Many of my favourite images are quiet, cropped, or focused on the connection, not perfection.

If you do want to be included, here’s what I offer:

  • Simple styling advice beforehand

  • Soft lighting and flattering angles

  • A few gentle poses - nothing stiff or awkward

  • Patience, warmth, and absolutely no judgement

Siblings are also welcome to be part of the session. I often begin or end with family shots, so little ones can head off with a partner or grandparent when their part is done.

How Posing and Comfort Work

You might have seen those sweet images of babies curled up on soft blankets or nestled in little baskets, and wondered how we get there.

Here’s the truth: every pose is optional, and every baby leads the way.

I use a baby-led posing style. That means:

  • No forcing, propping, or positioning that baby resists

  • We work with their natural flexibility and comfort

  • Poses are simple, timeless, and safe

  • I watch baby’s cues constantly - if they fuss or stretch, we pause or switch

Safety is my absolute priority. I’m trained in newborn handling and always prioritise baby’s temperature, circulation, and positioning. You’ll be nearby at all times, and I’ll always let you know what I’m doing and why.

After the Session: What Happens Next?

Once your session is complete, I’ll carefully edit and prepare your gallery.

You’ll receive your full gallery within [insert turnaround time, e.g. 10–14 days]. This will be:

  • Delivered in a private online gallery, OR

  • Viewed together in a studio ordering appointment - your choice

You’ll be able to choose your favourite images, upgrade your package if you wish, and decide how you’d love to enjoy your photos - as digital images, prints, or keepsakes.

There’s no pushy sales pitch or pressure. Just timeless, beautifully edited images for you to fall in love with.

FAQs - Just in Case You’re Wondering

What if my baby won’t sleep or cries the whole time?
Totally normal. I’ve seen it all. We go slowly, take breaks, and adapt as needed. Crying is part of the process - not a problem.

What should I wear if I want to be in the photos?
Simple, neutral clothing works best - soft textures, light tones, no bold patterns. I’ll send you a full prep guide before the session.

Can I bring something special (like a blanket or toy)?
Yes! Personal touches are always welcome. I’ll weave them naturally into your images.

Do you photograph babies older than 3 weeks?
Yes. While the curled-up sleepy phase is most common under 3 weeks, we can adapt for older newborns and still capture gorgeous photos.

Let’s Capture This Beautiful Beginning

You only get one chance to capture your baby at this stage — and I’d be honoured to help you preserve these first memories.

My Bournemouth studio is designed to be your soft landing place in those early weeks. Whether you’ve just brought your baby home, or you’re still counting down to your due date, I’d love to talk about creating a session that suits you.
