Best Time for a Newborn Photoshoot: Everything You Need to Know

Welcoming a new baby is one of the most life-changing and emotional journeys you’ll ever take. The newborn stage passes so quickly, in just a matter of weeks, your tiny baby begins to change, grow, and wake up to the world.

That’s why so many parents choose to book a newborn photoshoot. It’s your chance to pause time and capture your baby exactly as they are in those early days.

But one of the biggest questions I’m asked is:
“When is the best time to schedule my newborn session?”

If you're based in Bournemouth or surrounding areas like Poole, Wimborne, or Christchurch, this guide will help you feel prepared, and excited, about capturing your baby’s first memories.

Why Does Timing Matter for Newborn Photography?

Newborn photography is all about capturing those beautifully calm, sleepy, curled-up moments. To do that, we work with your baby’s natural rhythms, particularly in the very early days of life.

After just a few weeks, your baby will begin to stretch out, stay awake longer, and become more active. These changes are wonderful to witness as a parent, but they do make certain classic newborn poses more challenging.

That’s why timing matters.

The Ideal Window for You Newborn Photoshoot: 5 to 14 Days Old

The sweet spot for a newborn photoshoot is usually between day 5 and day 14 after birth.

Here’s why:

  • Sleepier babies: In those first two weeks, babies sleep more deeply and for longer stretches.

  • More flexible for posing: They still naturally curl into those womb-like positions.

  • Less sensitive to noise and touch: Perfect for a calm, relaxed shoot.

  • Skin is usually clearer: Many newborns develop baby acne or flaky skin after 2–3 weeks.

This doesn’t mean we can’t photograph older babies, but this window gives us the best chance of capturing those classic newborn images.

What If My Baby Is Already 3-5 Weeks Old?

Don’t worry, I regularly photograph babies who are a little older than the ideal window. The session may look a little different, and here’s how:

  • We may focus more on awake moments and natural expressions.

  • Some of the super-curly poses may not be possible.

  • Sessions might take a little longer to allow for settling and soothing.

But the result is just as beautiful - often more personality shines through in older newborn images!

If you live in Poole, Christchurch, Ferndown, or Broadstone, and you’ve just discovered newborn photography, it’s not too late. I’ll adapt the session to suit your baby, and we’ll create something meaningful and unique for your family.

Booking Before Birth - Why It’s Smart

Because babies rarely arrive on their due date, it’s best to book your newborn session during pregnancy.

Here’s how it works:

  1. We pencil in a provisional date based on your due date.

  2. When baby arrives, you simply get in touch.

  3. I’ll adjust your session to a time that works for you, ideally within the 5–14 day window.

Booking early guarantees your place in my diary. I only take a limited number of newborn bookings per month to make sure I have space to reschedule when needed.

Flexibility Is Key (Especially for New Mums)

Recovering from birth is different for every mother, and I understand that fully.

If you need to push the session back a few days to rest, or if your baby needs a little extra time in hospital, we’ll adapt. My newborn sessions in Bournemouth are designed to be gentle, baby-led, and never rushed.

What to Expect:

  • Sessions are baby-led, prioritising your little one’s comfort and safety.

  • I create a calm, cosy environment to capture natural and posed images.

  • You’ll walk away with stunning portraits that celebrate your growing family.

What Happens During the Session?

Each newborn photoshoot takes place in my cosy Bournemouth studio, which is:

  • Kept warm and calm to soothe baby

  • Fully equipped with wraps, props, and soft lighting

  • Designed to make parents feel welcome and relaxed

Sessions usually last 2–3 hours to allow plenty of time for feeding, cuddling, and breaks. You’ll never feel hurried, and siblings or parents are always welcome in the photos too.

What If My Baby Arrives Early or Late?

Totally fine. Your booking is flexible.

Whether your baby is early, late, or right on time - I’ll work around your schedule to make sure we find a date that suits your baby’s needs and your comfort.

Final Thoughts: Don’t Miss the Moment

Newborn photos are more than just images. They’re memories of a feeling, the weight of your baby in your arms, the soft fuzz on their head, the tiny toes curled against your chest.

These early days are emotional, messy, and magical. And they don’t last long.

If you’re expecting a baby and want to capture this precious stage in a way that feels calm, personal, and beautiful, I’d love to welcome you to my Bournemouth studio.
